How to Become a Behavior Technician

The job of a behavior technician is a mid-level administrative job in a mental health care facility. To obtain this job you must have a high school diploma and at least two years working as a trainee under the supervision of a licensed psychologist and be involved in the health care of adults or adolescents in need of mental health care. The main focus of this job is to observe the clients' behavior, collect data and administer different types of standardized intelligence and personality tests. You do need to have an in-depth knowledge of these tests and the various ways in which they can be administered.

Other requirements for the position of behavior technician include knowledge of the various treatment theories that apply to each client’s problems. A keen ability to observe and record date is essential in this position. You also need to have exceptional interpersonal skills in order to establish good relationships with the clients, some of whom can be quite difficult to deal with. You also need to have a good rapport with your supervisors and colleagues. Most states also require certification and licensing as a health care provider, as well as certification in the treatment of substance abuse to be able to work in this type of job.

As part of the duties of behavior technician, you will often work with a group of clients in a group therapy session. You will need to be able to keep calm in stressful situations and be sympathetic to the problems of the clients. At other times, you will meet with the clients individually and observe their behavior. One of the most important facets of this type of work is meticulous record keeping. You will have to record accurate details of all your observations and include even the most minute details that may seem irrelevant at first, but could be quite important for the diagnosis and treatment procedures. Basic computer skills are needed, as you will have to enter this information into the computer system.



Confidentiality of client files and information is essential in the job of behavior technician. This is not only out of respect for the clients, but is also in keeping with privacy laws. When dealing with the families of the clients’ you are not supposed to reveal any information that the client told you in confidence. You will have to retest clients on a regular basis to determine if the treatments are having any effect or if you need to take another approach. Providing assistance to other staff members in delivering services by screening the clients and preparing a schedule of tests that you will perform.

This can be a highly stressful job for which you need to be mentally and physically fit. You will have to pass physical and psychological exams before you are hired in this position because of the nature of the job. You can work as you obtain your certificates because you don’t have to have them in order to get a job. Many of the certification courses are available online. You do have to check your state’s regulations to make sure you take the courses for the proper certification that you need.
