Database management is a field of information technology. In an administrative position in this area, your primary responsibility will be to manage the computer database of a company or organization. The database holds a large number of files stored electronically and in this position you have to maintain and upgrade this database in addition to allowing other personnel to be able to access the files. A typical business database would include details of sales transactions, inventory lists and the mailing addresses of customers and suppliers. In a school system for example, a database might include the records of all the students in the district, a list of teachers, a list of job openings and a list of teacher applications for the various positions.

The minimum qualifications you would need to work in database management would be a degree in Computer Science from an accredited university. You may also need to have certifications in various computer programs and applications, such as Microsoft technician, A++, C+, Cisco Systems or one of many others. In order to write the programs needed for many database functions, you will need to know several computer languages, such as Oracle, MySQL and Access. You may qualify for many entry-level positions in this field with a one or two-year course from a technical or vocational college. When you do get hired in a position, you can then work on gaining the qualifications and experience you need to advance to administrative positions.

Companies that hire personnel in database management positions look for more skills than those evident in your list of qualifications. You will need to have excellent written and spoken communication skills as well as interpersonal skills. You should also have patience as there will be people in the company with very limited computer knowledge and skills and they will come to you with questions on how to access certain applications. Some of the courses potential employers will be looking for in your university transcripts include courses in humanities, liberal arts and the social sciences to ensure that you do have a well-rounded education.

Getting a job in database management means you do need to have an in-depth knowledge of platforms used in database systems. This is actually the most important part of the job to keep the computer databases up and running. You will also have to establish policies and procedures for staff usage of the programs so that they will not accidentally do something that will bring down the whole system. As staff leave the organization and new staff is hired, you must be able to delete and add users to the system. Therefore, you must have specific areas, which only you can access. Continuing education is also a part of the position because it is essential that you keep up with the changes in technology and the new and better operating systems you can use. The best way to keep up with changes in the filed of database management is to continually upgrade your skills, obtain extra certifications and learn several different computer languages. This will enable you to move to advanced positions in this field when they become available.
