If you are looking for a challenging job in the administrative field, you may be qualified for the position of probation officer. The main duty of this job is to assist those who have just been released from jail to be rehabilitated back into society and help them stay out of trouble in the future. When these people are on parole, it will be your job to supervise their activities and stay in contact with them and their families. There is usually a stipulation in the release that they make contact with you on a regular basis. This can take the form of you meeting with them in your office, but you may also have to visit them at home or at work.

In the job of probation officer, you will also be working with many community groups, such as religious organizations that can help you monitor the behavior of the offenders. In the case of those offenders that need extra help, it will be your responsibility to arrange for them to get the help they need, which could include substance abuse help, medical care, or employment assistance. . The age level of the offenders you work with will depend on your location. If you work in a large city, you may only deal with youth or with adults, while in small areas, you may have the responsibility for both. The number of cases you have also depends on the area and the number of offenders. You will work with the court system, investigating the background of the accused, and recommending the length of jail term.

You must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. Many universities now offer a degree in Criminal Justice, but you can hold a degree in Social Work or Psychology to qualify for this job. You do need to be in good physical health and submit a medical from a physician attesting to the fact that you are fit for duty. There is an age limit for this position as well. You must be between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-seven at the time you receive employment in this position and the mandatory retirement age is fifty-seven. An extensive background check is essential for this position and even when you get hired there may be periodic re-investigations into your activities. Random drug testing is a regular occurrence on this job to ensure that you are not taking any illegal drugs.



As part of the process of applying for such a position, you will have to pass a comprehensive written and oral exam to demonstrate that you have the knowledge and skills required for the job. Probation officers also have to undergo psychological testing to ensure you are mentally capable of handling the responsibilities.
