A clinical lab technician tests body fluids and cells to see if they contain bacteria and viruses that can cause disease. This is an important part of the diagnosis of an illness. In the lab environment, a technician will match blood for transfusions, look for abnormalities in the blood and perform DNA testing. There are various types of testing carried out in this setting, but this is not the only component of the job. After the testing is complete, you will have to analyze the results and prepare a report for the physician requesting the testing.

Although a clinical lab technician still uses microscopes and cell counters, there are much more specialized types of equipment that makes this job less hands-on that it used to be. The computerized equipment makes it possible for you to complete several tests on the same cells or fluids at the same time. The type of laboratory work you will have to do depends on the size of the facility in which you work. In larger institutions, most technicians specialize in one area, such as hematology, immunology, phlebotomy or one of several others. In smaller facilities, you may need the skills to perform all types of testing.

To qualify for a clinical laboratory technician position, you can have either a hold a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Science or medical terminology or a diploma from a college course in this field. Many technical colleges offer a program for lab technicians that contains specialized courses that give you the knowledge you need for the job. If you have a certificate in the area of clinical laboratory techniques and procedures, you have a greater chance of obtaining a job. There are many agencies that offer this certification with different course requirements. Laboratory personnel must be licensed or registered to be able to work in some states. You should thoroughly research these requirements for your state to make sure that you have all the credentials you need.

You do need to have specific training in the methods for working with infectious specimens when you apply for a job as a clinical lab technician. You do have to wear protective masks, gloves and in some cases goggles to protect yourself from the hazards of the job. When dealing with some of the solutions in the lab, you have to be vigilant that you adhere to the policies regarding working with these materials. You do need to have an eye examination before you obtain this type of position as well. Perfect eyesight is essential as well as good color vision. You will also need to have good analytical and problem-solving skills to work as a clinical lab technician. While you may not have all the skills necessary to operate the specialized equipment when you first get hired, you will receive training on the job to become skillful in their operation. Through education and experience, you can advance to become a clinical laboratory technologist, a position that requires more advanced skills.

What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
