Shell Energy is looking for a dynamic leader to oversee a team of seven Commercial Advisors based in Houston, TX and Mexico City, MX. The Shell Energy natural gas, power and clean energy products Trading and Marketing Business is growing as Shell continues to Power Progress and reduce Carbon emissions globally. We need a strong leader to ensure the Commercial Advisor Team help facilitate this rapid growth in a fast-paced Trading and Marketing environment and deliver results by effective execution of contracts that preserve value for Shell. The Commercial Advisor Team Lead and Commercial Advisors support Shell Energy’s Trading and Marketing activities in the US, Mexico, and South America by providing pre-deal advice to ensure efficient contract negotiation, negotiating fit for purpose contracts that mitigate risk and preserve value, and ensuring all contracts adhere to Shell Energy’s Controls Framework and Global Shell policies.

What is the role?

The main aspects of the Commercial Advisor Team Lead include: (i) ensuring the Commercial Advisor Team provides excellent support to the Shel Energy Trading and Marketing Teams when drafting and negotiating commodity contracts and other agreements related to the delivery of energy commodities to Shell’s customers and counterparty’s; (ii) leading and developing a highly effective Commercial Advisor Team that engage in purposeful collaboration, demonstrate strong commercial acumen, and possess expertise in drafting and negotiating commodity contracts while remaining compliant with Shell policies, and (iii) supporting Shell Energy’s growth activities by negotiating complex contracts and developing agreements templates for new products and new markets.

Dimension of a Commercial Advisor Team Lead-

The Commercial Advisor is responsible for drafting and negotiating contracts that enable the purchase and sale of energy commodities, as well as other agreements that enable the delivery of energy products and services.

The Commercial Advisor Team Lead and Senior Commercial Advisors also draft and negotiate complex contracts and supports business grown in new markets and with new products.

Provides timely feedback and improves the Commercial Advisor Team’s performance through meaningful coaching, sharing knowledge and learnings, providing opportunities for development, and keeping the team accountable to complete individual development activities.

Applies in depth knowledge and experience in the gas, power and renewable energy markets in North America during the contract negotiation process.

Delivers commercially focused pre-deal and contract advice that is in line with Shell Trading & Supply policies and guidelines.

Has strong focus on the delivery of business outcomes, while maintaining compliance with appropriate controls.

Ability to analyze a situation/task/request, identity the deliverables and collaborate with others to accomplish the desired outcomes.

Continuous improvement mindset that drives self and team to deliver additional value to the business by finding innovative ways to eliminate complexity and save money.

Identifies risks associated with contract language and obtains requisite input and approval from internal stakeholders for deviations to Shell’s standard contract terms and operational processes.

Works in collaboration with internal functions such as Commercial, Credit, Finance, Tax, Legal, Regulatory and Compliance, throughout the contract negotiation process to ensure risks are mitigated and deviations can be managed internally.

What we need from you

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

A degree in Law, Paralegal Certification, Engineering, Business, or equivalent practical experience working with commodity contracts. Prior experience working in a fast-paced energy Trading and Marketing environment, is required.

A minimum of six years working experience drafting, analyzing, and negotiating commodity contracts in a fast-paced environment.

Experience in leading a diverse team of energy professionals that draft and negotiate commodity contracts in a fast-paced Trading and Marketing space. Experience in providing indirect leadership and demonstrated ability to develop others through coaching and mentoring will be considered.

Fluency in English (written and oral) is required. Fluency in Spanish (written and oral) is a plus, but not required.

Strong commercial acumen required and the ability to provide excellent support to the Sales and Origination Team by drafting and negotiating commodity contracts that preserve value for Shell, minimize risk and maintain compliance with Shell policies.

Proven interpersonal skills, teamwork, strong reading comprehension and excellent analytical ability.

Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to prioritize and manage a heavy workload, meet deadlines with a sense of urgency, while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.

Demonstrated mature judgment and adherence to company and regulatory guidelines. Ability to be self-motivated and capable of working autonomously.
