Profile

Applegate & Thorne-Thomsen is seeking a 1L law student for its Ida Platt Legal Fellowship, named in honor of Ida Platt, the first African-American woman admitted to the Illinois bar. The fellowship is a full-time, paid position within our firm’s Chicago office that will last approximately ten weeks over the course of the fellow’s rising 2L summer. Outstanding fellows will be invited to return the following summer as a full-time summer associate eligible for a permanent, full-time attorney position with our firm upon graduation from law school.

Skills and Qualifications:

We are seeking talented, self-motivated law students with strong academic credentials, excellent writing and research skills and a deep commitment to and interest in affordable housing and community development. We strongly encourage diverse candidates to apply, as the firm values diversity, equity and inclusion.

Responsibilities:

Fellows will gain meaningful exposure to our firm’s practice over the course of the summer. Fellows will work closely with our firm’s attorneys to assist with complex real estate closings, draft related legal documents, research regulatory and case law matters and provide general administrative support. Fellows will also participate in several training programs and practice group meetings.

Our Firm:

Founded in 1998, Applegate & Thorne-Thomsen serves its clients in all aspects of real estate development, ownership, financing and investment.  Our passion for improving communities gives us purpose and guides our choices. We focus our efforts on affordable housing and community development, integral components of a strong community. In collaboration with our clients, we help strengthen communities and that helps make the world better for all of us.  Our commitment and legal expertise enables our clients to effectively navigate the complexities of the affordable housing and community development industries, so projects close and get built as quickly as possible.

Applegate & Thorne-Thomsen is the “go-to” law firm in the country for community development projects involving housing, schools, healthcare facilities, community centers, business incubators, industrial facilities and more, both at the local and national levels. Our firm has particular expertise in federal low-income housing tax credits, federal historic tax credits, new market tax credits, energy credits and state tax credits and represents a diverse range of clients, from community-based developers and public housing authorities to Fortune 100 corporations and banking institutions.

Clients seek us out because we do not shy away from the complexity of a transaction. With our collective years of experience representing developers, syndicators, lenders, investors, nonprofit organizations, and public housing authorities, we are comfortable navigating complex transactions, grappling with new laws and federal and state financing and subsidy programs, while always remaining plugged into market and industry trends. We do all of this so we can deliver the best experience for our clients, and further our commitment to building better communities.
