Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor is seeking a part-time Paralegal/Reader to work side-by-side with and assist a senior, high-profile, blind attorney whose primary focus is on writing books, papers and articles, as well as preparing and conducting presentations for professional audiences. Together with the attorney, you will review cases, articles, emails and his written materials. You will divide your time between the attorney’s office taking direction from him and your workstation working independently to complete other projects he has assigned.
This is an interesting and challenging non-exempt, part-time position working 20-25 hours per week. The specific workdays and hours can be flexible, and we will strive to accommodate your schedule needs.
Daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Be aware of upcoming assignments, take detailed notes and update files to keep the attorney’s practice organized and ready to meet all deadlines.
Summarize or read aloud written digital and paper material not accessible to the attorney.
Maintain and organize hard copy and electronic files.
Read and edit papers, including footnotes, with the attorney.
Proof/edit documents and confirm accuracy of footnotes.
Gather and organize papers for the attorney’s review.
Monitor format of papers to ensure they are in line with publisher or conference requirements.
Assist with research/information collection on the attorney’s areas of expertise.
Keep paper calendar and driving schedule updated.
Westlaw research.
Maintain subscriptions and save materials for the attorney to read.
Maintain the attorney’s inbox – keep paper folders to correspond with the attorney’s subfolders.
Assist the attorney with navigating the computer and internet work.
Locate and read aloud needed information from office memoranda, reference books and internet sources.
Assist the attorney with any other duties to enable him to work effectively and successfully (sending faxes, making copies, completing forms, accompanying him around the office, etc.).
Requirements:
A successful candidate will be a skilled and competent reader, able to comprehend a wide range of legal concepts, principles and practices; will be reliable, punctual and adaptable.
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and to interact with a wide variety of people.
Strong technology, writing and organizational skills and superior attention to detail.
Proven ability to multi task and meet deadlines, follow instructions and adapt to various types of materials to be read.
Previous experience reviewing, proofreading, writing and editing preferred.
