TPWD MISSION
To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Student Internship Program introduces interested college students to career opportunities to gain practical experience and training in natural and cultural resource fields. Under the direct supervision of the Wildlife District Leader, this intern position will assist District Biologists with deer survey counts, dove field posting, vegetation surveys, research projects, prescribed fires, chronic wasting disease (CWD) related activities, etc. Performs required administrative duties commensurate with state employment. Assist with maintaining state buildings, structures, and vehicles. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months;
Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application;
Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or Pass on a Pass/Fail system.
Licensure:
Current National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 2 training or willingness to obtain training upon acceptance of the internship;

NOTE: Retention of internship contingent upon maintaining required license.
Physical:
Must be able to pass the FFTII moderate duty physical fitness standard (walk 2 miles with a 25 lb. pack in 30 minutes or less).
NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon meeting and maintaining physical requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an accredited college or university in a Wildlife Science or closely related Bachelor's or Master's degree program.
Experience:
Experience in safe equipment operation and maintenance (e.g., ATVs/UTVs, four-wheel drive, off-road vehicles, hauling trailers, etc.)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of prescribed burns;
Knowledge of field vegetation survey techniques;
Knowledge of Texas wildlife habitats and species;
Skill with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook;
Skill in effective verbal and written communication;
Skill in effective interaction with others;
Skill with personal computers;
Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;
Ability to work as a member of a team;
Ability to travel to various work locations;
Ability to safely operate four-wheeled drive trucks, ATVs, tractor/implements, and other vehicles as assigned;
Ability to haul trailers as assigned;
Ability to safely operate power equipment such as mowers, weed eater, and/or chainsaws as assigned;
Ability to safely operate non-powered hand-tools, compass, global positioning system (GPS), and other equipment as assigned;
Ability to follow scientific protocols;
Ability to conduct field work in potentially harsh weather conditions over rough terrain;
Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;
Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Required to work 40 hours per week;
Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;
Required to work on holidays, weekends and hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as necessary;
Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;
May be required to travel 50-75% day travel with overnight stays. A state vehicle will be available to travel to and from field. Lodging and food costs for approved overnight travel is reimbursable;
Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;
Required to walk and work in soft unstable soils;
Lodging may be available;
Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures;
Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
